Elements of Art Principles of Design

Lines- are marks made by a pointed tool: brush, pencil, pen, etc. Lines can vary in width, direction, curvature, length, or color.

Shapes- are formed wherever the ends of a continuous line meet. Geometric shapes such as circles, triangles or squares have perfect, uniform measurements and don't often appear in nature. Organic shapes are associated with things from the natural world, like plants and animals.

Color-  Color wheels show the primary colors, secondary colors, and the tertiary (intermediate) colors. They also show the relationships between complementary colors across from each other, such as blue and orange; and analogous (similar or related) colors next to each other such as yellow, green, and blue. Black and white may be thought of as colors but, in fact, they are not. White light is the presence of all color; black is the absence of reflected light and therefore the absence of color.

Value (Tone)- refers to dark and light; the value scale refers to black and white with all gradations of gray in between.  Value contrasts help us to see and understand a two-dimensional work of art.

Form- describes objects that are three-dimensional, having length, width, and height.

Texture- can be rough, bumpy, slick, scratchy, smooth, silky, soft, prickly--the list is endless.  Texture refers to the surface quality, both simulated and actual, of artwork.

Space- refers to distances or areas around, between, or within components of a piece. Space can be positive (white or light) or  negative (black or dark), open or closed, shallow or deep, and two-dimensional or three-dimensional.

                                                      PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
Balance-is the comfortable or pleasing arrangement of things in art.  There are three different types of balance: symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial. The human figure is symmetrically balanced; the same on the left and right side. The tree is asymmetrically balanced; its branches are not distributed equally on each side, but their total weight is balanced left and right. The sun is an example of radial balance; all its rays are equal in length from the center.

Contrast is created by using elements that conflict with one another. Often, contrast is created using complementary colors or extremely light and dark values. Contrast creates interest in a piece and often draws the eye to certain areas. It is used to make a painting look interesting.

Emphasis- in the focal area of an artwork gives it importance.  An artist may stress some elements of the design over others. The eye of the viewer will focus on the area of emphasis or center of interest first, then take in the rest of the composition.

Movement- in an artwork means the artist is taking viewers on a trip through the work by means of lines, edges, shapes, and colors often leading to the focal area.  Movement is a visual flow through the composition. It can be the suggestion of motion in a design as you move from object to object by way of placement and position.  Directional movement can be created with a value pattern. It is with the placement of dark and light areas that you can move your attention through the format.

Patterns- are made in art when the same shapes or elements are repeated again and again.  Pattern uses the elements of art in planned or random repetitions to enhance surfaces of paintings or sculptures.

Rhythm- is the repetition of shapes, lines, and forms.  Rhythm is a movement in which some elements recurs regularly.  Like a dance, it will have a flow of objects that will seem to be like the beat of music.

Unity- means that all elements in an artwork are in harmony.  Unity brings together a composition with similar units.  For example, if your composition was using wavy lines and organic shapes you would stay with those types of lines and not put in even one geometric shape.

THE RULE OF THIRDS

In this photo the rule of thirds is presented because the twin towers ,which are the main focus, are slightly to the side and you also  see the plane in the far corner flying around to go for another hit.

BALANCE

The twin towers are called TWIN for a reason. This picture proves to us that they are alike so with that said they have a nice even balance between them.

LINES

This photo was taken horizontally and upward, so the sun highlights the lines of the building and draws the eye to the picture.

Frame

This picture actually looks like a picture frame. It shows the flying flag in front of the fallen grumble of the towers which are framed by the broken window.

Simplicity

This photo shows simplicity of the tower coming to a grumble. It attracts the eye because you can see the form of the clouds and all the rumble falling piece by piece.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

The main point of the article was that even though photo editing exists there are people out there that miss use it. By changing a photo you can send out a way different message that isn't true.  It hardly ever has a good result. For example all those photographers that got there  photo license taken away, fired, and ruined reputation. This type of photo editing isn't acceptable because it causes so much drama and could even start a war.

I picked this photo to be the most unethical, because they stuck her face on some other women's body! if i was Oprah i would extremely mad. I believe that every person is beautiful in there own way. being thin doesn't make you beautiful.

I picked this photo as the least unethical, because they just made the pyramids closer to fit on the magazine. Its still the same pyramids just changed position.

Top 40 Most Powerful Photos

I picked this photo because i thought is was adorable and showed respect. The composition wasn't what really gravitated me to the picture it was the symbolism that did. I think this photo made the top 40 because it was a big event in history and really captures how the Kennedy family took their loss.
This picture was one of my top 3 because i think its such an amazing moment that was captured. The composition grabbed my attention because its zoomed in to catch the boys facial expression. I believe that this pictured made it to the top 40 because the little boys face is priceless for being able to hear for the first time.
I chose this picture cause i thought it was so romantic! ^.^ The composition of the picture drew my attention because the lights in the background look like fireworks. i believe this was one of the top 40 cause it shows how committed a guy can be in a relationship.

Post Shoot Reflection

Positive:
1. All the photos were well captured and focused.
2. I love the detail of the metal photo.

Negative:
1. She could've zoomed in on her red picture.

Favorite national geographic (:

This is my favorite picture because its a picture inside of a picture. Its so detailed you can even see each eyelash one by one. You kinda have to double take when you first see it which is what i liked too.

Depth of Field: is the range of distance that appears acceptably sharp.
F-Stop: the setting of an adjustable lens aperture, as indicated by an f number.
Focal length: how mc magnification  it provides.

Shutter button: the button you push to take a picture. when its pushed the shutter is "released" to capture the picture.
Lens release button: releases the lens so you can see what your going to take a picture of

Camera History

  1. The "camera obscura"which in Latin means "dark room" as the first camera. The hole acted like a lens, focusing and projecting light onto the wall of the dark chamber .
  2. Issac Newton and Christian Huygens understood optics and how to make high quality glass lenses.
  3. A glass lens, a dark box, and film.
  4. Light passes through the lens, into the camera, and exposes the film. In the end you still get a picture.
  5.  With an electronic sensor called a CCD.
  6. Auto mode will completely control flash exposure. Program just point and shoot and you control the flash.
  7. It  is used to blur out the background, camera will use the fastest lens avaliable.
  8. To freeze motion, camera will use the highest shutter speed possible.
  9. Because you get faster camera response time, more control over focus, and encourages better composition.
  10. Disabled flash or no flash needed cause there is enough natural light.
  11. Auto-Flash which mens the camera will send flash whenever it thinks it is needed.
  12. Too much light and the picture will be washed out.
  13. Not enough light and the picture will be too light.
  14. A "stop' is a relative measure of light.
  15. 1 stop brighter.
  16. 2 stops brighter.
  17. A longer shutter speeds has more light .
  18. A shorter shutter speed has less light.
  19. Controls amount of light.
  20. by moving it stops brighter.

First Photos- Worst and Best taken ;o

This is my worst photo taken. I say this because its not centered, its blurry, and another person is in it. Another reason is because you can't really tell who I'm tying to take a picture of.
This is my "best" picture taken. Unfortunetly  its also blurry and you can't really see him that well. i promise i will improve and  my next pictures will be better!

Welcome to my blog!! ^.^
